In an effort to appear like more than just a browser, Chrome OS outfits you with a desktop that features familiar items along the bottom edge. The Launcher button in the bottom-left corner will immediately remind Windows users of the Start button. Akin to the Windows taskbar, Chrome OS has an app shelf where you can dock icons for your favorite apps. And there is a small area in the bottom right that acts like the Windows system tray where you can access settings along with battery and network information.
The app shelf saves you the step of first clicking or tapping the Launcher button before clicking or tapping the app you wish to open. By pinning apps to the shelf, they are but one click or tap away.
There are three ways you can pin an app to the shelf.
1. From the launcher
When you are staring at the grid of apps in the app launcher, you can right-click any app and choose Pin to shelf.
2. From the app shelf itself
For apps set to open as their own window (as opposed to a tab in Chrome), their icon appears in the shelf when they are open. If you would like to make an app's icon a permanent member of the shelf, while the app is open and its icon is in the shelf, right-click its icon and choose Pin.
3. From inside Chrome
For an app that doesn't open in its own window but as a tab in Chrome, you can still add its icon to the shelf. Make sure that its tab is active in Chrome and then click the triple-dot button in the top-right corner of Chrome, click More tools and then click Add to shelf. You can also use this method to pin a website to the shelf.
Lastly, if you would like to remove an app from the shelf, just right-click on its icon and choose Unpin or click on an app and drag it from the shelf. You can also drag and drop icons on the shelf to rearrange them.

I love love love the pinning feature in Windows 7 and use it for EVERYTHING.. folders, files, RDP sessions and the list goes on. One of the things I had not figured out to do was to pin one of my mapped drives to the taskbar, i.e. my user directory or shared drive. Finally I got the solution today and thought I would share!
This information came from: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/97533-taskbar-pin-unpin-drive.html
3 Steps totalStep 1: Create Generic EXE File
Open Notepad (note: leave the notepad document blank!)
Click on 'File' and 'Save as' Navigate to your desktop. Under Save as type, change it to 'All Files (*.*)' Type in a name you want for this (ex: U Drive.exe) with the .exe file extension at the end, and click on the Save button Step 2: Pin EXE to Taskbar
Minimize to your desktop
Right click on the saved .exe file on your desktop (ex: U Drive.exe), and click on 'Pin to Taskbar' Step 3: Modify Target of EXE File
Now your icon should be on the taskbar
Right click on the new icon On the jump-list that appears, right-click again on your exe file (ex: U Drive.exe) and select 'Properties' Change the 'Target' to your mapped drive letter (ex: U:) Clear all text from the 'Start In' box Click OK
Dark souls 1 magic build. Now clicking on this icon in your taskbar should bring you into your mapped drive. Note that the icon should update after logging off or restarting once. This icon can also be pinned or moved to other locations to use as a shortcut.

Google Chrome has begun an annoying habit recently of auto-pinning itself to my quicklaunch bar in Windows 7, at seemingly random times and no matter how many times I manually unpin it. It doesn't seem to be tied to automatic updates; I've noted the version and manually unpinned, and confirmed that the version is the same the next time it pins itself. I'd like to disable this behavior, but haven't found the option in Settings. Any ideas how to fix this?
My current version of Chrome is 20.0.1132.43.

This one was VERY tricky, since Google Chrome doesn't use any of the conventional means to pin an icon to the taskbar and the desktop. However, there is a specific area of the registry that, if deleted, prevents this behavior. The contents of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{8A69D345-D564-463c-AFF1-A69D9E530F96} in .reg file format are:
IF YOU DELETE THIS ENTIRE SECTION:
..then Chrome stops pinning itself to everything with every new user. In testing, the only ill effect is that it seems you will need to add a shortcut to Chrome to the Start Menu (I guess the setup.exe program adds the shortcut as well).
Hope this helps..

Open 'C:Program Files (x86)GoogleChromeApplicationmaster_preferences' (as Administrator).
To remove the Chrome taskbar shortcut:
Append 'do_not_create_taskbar_shortcut':true i.e. {'distribution':{'make_chrome_default_for_user':true,'do_not_create_taskbar_shortcut':true}
To remove the Chrome desktop shortcut:
Append 'do_not_create_desktop_shortcut':true
To remove the Chrome taskbar, desktop and start menu:
'do_not_create_any_shortcuts' : true
See here for more details
I recommend leaving Active Setup for Chrome alone (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{8A69D345-D564-463c-AFF1-A69D9E530F96} for 32bit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{8A69D345-D564-463c-AFF1-A69D9E530F96} for 64bit).

user190509's answer seems correct and was very helpful to me. I would just add that on Windows 7x64 the registry key is:
This fix worked for me with Chrome 36.0.1985.125.

Unicef education for kids in rural areas. if you move an icons position on the bar while its open it will also add it as pinned to that place.
this may be a irrelevant to you, but at any point to you click and perhaps hold the icon a bit too long, which activates the move/sort icon action of icons on the bar? or actually moved the chrome icon on your bar? if either of these are true this will be what is happening for you.

'do_not_create_any_shortcuts':true works like a champ, however, it MUST be placed in the 'distribution:' section of the master_preferences file, ie:
Add Google Icon To Taskbar
{'homepage':.. 'distribution':{'skip_first_run_ui':false,'import_search_engine':false,'do_not_create_any_shortcuts':true}..}
